SAN MATEO -- A Saratoga man who posed as a financial adviser faces 16 felony charges of scamming elderly clients out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, authorities said Wednesday. Lewis Lee, 71, allegedly used charm and apparent financial knowledge to gain the trust of elderly clients, many of whom had been referred by their friends or family, in order to steal their money, said San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Norris. He passed himself off as a tax accountant and financial adviser, but Lee didn't hold the relevant business licenses, Norris said. Though police took Lee into custody September 6, they didn't make his arrest public until Wednesday. Lee has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is out of jail on $100,000 bail. The six-month investigation that led to Lee's arrest began in March, police said. Investigators learned he would prepare a person's tax returns for a few years, all the while becoming their friend. At some point he would ask them to invest a large amount of money in stock options or an "investment club." Police say his criminal enterprise was elaborate and included the Lewis E. Lee Company, an office and website. The site was still up Wednesday afternoon and the office phone number still worked. Defense attorney Chuck Smith said Lee has decades of experience as an accountant and the bulk of the charges stem from an investment that also cost his client money. Smith said Lee was investing in a Chinese Internet company and advised his clients to do so as well. It turned out to be scam. "He thought they were legit," said Smith. "But they don't appear to be so." Lee is due back in San Mateo County Superior Court Dec. 6 to face 11 counts of embezzlement, four counts of elder theft and a once residential burglary charge, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Lewi Lee has now been found guilty on all charges (78 ?) AND IS AWAITING SENTENCING on Aprii 26 2015
