My husband started a construction business on 07/21/14 with a 12 man crew including himself. He builds hog barns for a company so there isn’t actual inventory or sales going on we were only needing payroll and help with our taxes for the first year. We knew this wasn’t undoable, but being completely new to business we knew we would need help our first year. We happened to come across Amy through a mutual friend that had just starting working with her. At our initial meeting Amy quoted us figures of $25/hour and averages of $700-$750/month for the services she would be providing us. We didn’t end up even receiving our 1st month bill until 10/20/14 for $3117. She ended up stating that the amounts quoted were “New Customer” prices for our 1st month of business together (even though our first month bill ended up being over double the amount she quoted us.). We talked to her about this and she stated that due to it taking extra hours since we just started doing business together (after we got the bill) even though throughout the entirety of the time she had been telling us that she was surprised at how much less time it took. We told her that those prices were not going to work given we planned on only paying out at the most $750/month for her services. We asked what things we could do to help bring down the cost. We knew she offered a multitude of services, but we were looking for the basics given my husband had just started this business we don’t know what our annual income is until we have a look back period established. We understood this and the original quoted prices were why we chose to go with Amy since we weren’t sure what we were looking at in the future. She just told us that we should organize our receipts and other documents we have to exchange better. The prices would go back to normal now since everything had been input and the extra hours wouldn’t be needed anymore. October’s bill came and we were still being over double charged for her services as well as had 2 late payments made on our insurance payments that she was handling. We finally told Amy that we would be taking over pay roll at the end of the year (That’s when their agreement would end.) She agreed to helping until the end of the year, but made things completely uncomfortable for everyone after knowing we wanted to take over. She was asking my husband if her partner would be taking over our pay roll for us when we were done with her. Which wasn’t the case, we planned to take over. We just didn’t find it appropriate that she was asking us this of her partner and our mutual friend. That’s not our place to discuss her business with anyone. She then sent us another ridiculous bill so we decided to terminate Amy. Upon doing so she refused to send us our original documents back to us unless we signed a release agreement with some absurd demands that she emailed to us that she also stated was “non-negotiable”. She made the situation very uncomfortable by trying to bully us as well as was being very unprofessional by doing some, but not limited to the following things: Telling us, “You won’t be able to do this on your own.”, as well as, “You make XXX amount of dollars a week you should be able to handle it.”, blaming her partner (our mutual friend) on miscommunications, telling us she couldn’t do certain services with her QuickBooks Accounting Version that we could do easily with a trial version of QuickBooks, when asking for some of our login information so we could make sure that our insurance payments were being made. She then accused us of wanting to change the passwords to them on her. This wasn’t the case we simply just wanted to make sure the payments started getting paid in a timely manner. My husband never once stressed with the startup with our business until 4 months in dealing with her as our accountant. As well as accusing her partner and our mutual friend as stealing her client when in fact we are ourselves taking over the accounting portion of the business now after this adventure. The entire experience was uncomfortable and disappointing in the end to say the least. I wouldn’t recommend her to anyone after our experience.
